A correct percentage was not enough. HR needed to show an employee exactly why the result was 79.6 percent rather than “about 80.”
We calculated required hours from the contracted schedule and qualifying hours from the actual record, regardless of early arrival, overtime, late arrival, or early departure. The formula produced a fair and consistent result.
Naturally, employees who received leave did not complain. Someone who did not receive it might say, “I am sure I worked more than 80 percent.”
Without a prepared explanation, HR would have to reconstruct months of records and calculate the rate by hand. So the system printed the evidence in advance.
The explanation could say: required hours for this period were this amount; qualifying hours were that amount; the resulting attendance rate was 79.6 percent. The decision was no longer a mysterious output from a black box.
Correct calculation and explainable calculation are both system requirements.
